Types of Characters in Fiction

Major Characters– The plot and resolution of conflict revolves around these characters.

Minor Characters- These characters compliment the major characters and help plot events move forward.

Flat Characters- These characters are notable for their one of a kind personality traits or characteristics.  They do not undergo substantial change or growth in the course of the story.

Static Characters- These characters don’t change over time and remain primarily the same throughout the story.  Events in the story don’t alter this characters perceptions or actions.

Foil Character- These characters are used to enhance another through contrast.

Round Characters- Any character with a complex personality.  A writer’s focus is on developing these round characters, since readers put the most effort into following and understanding these characters.

Dynamic Characters- These characters usually change over time.  The change in outlook and character are permanent and are usually the result of the major characters conflict.  This character is opposite of a static character.

Stock Characters- These are characters have become stereotypical through repeated use in stories.  They are normally one dimensional, flat characters.  They are not the focus and are not developed in the story.

Protagonist- The central character or characters in the story.  They are faced with a conflict that must be resolved.

Antagonist- The character or situation that represents the opposition against which the protagonist must contend.

These are all character types in fiction.  Although they are listed separately, characters are often a combination of types.  In the end, it is all about your portrayal of the characters you create and how you make them come to life for your readers.
