Eye of Providence

In my new fantasy series, Witches of Griffin, three novice lightworkers travel to various dimensions and time periods to battle dark entities that threaten humanity. The sisters are descendants of Queen Cleopatra VII and the all-seeing eye shows up often in these stories as a symbol of hope and love from God. The symbol serves to remind us of spiritual truths and awakening, which many believe refers to opening one’s third eye.

Nowadays, the eye has a different interpretation as the symbol has been given negative connotations. Unfortunately, this has happened to many of the ancient symbols still around today. As I have never viewed this symbol negatively, I was surprised by how many people think the eye means you’re evil or that you delve in the occult or are a member of the Illuminati. So-called celebrities have even taken to making hundreds of selfies while covering one eye or throwing up a triangle with their hands. These are often influential people who have a large voice to push their propaganda and beliefs. Since many of them are self-proclaimed activists, it’s important to try and deduce why they are using this symbol. Are they merely playing follow the leader and continuing a trend or are they all trying to say they’re part of the Illuminati?

The eye of providence is a symbol of an eye often surrounded by rays of light or glory and usually enclosed in a triangle. It represents the eye of God watching over humanity. In the late 18th century, the eye was associated with Freemasonry and became a standard symbol for them in 1797. The symbol was to serve as a reminder that all of man’s thoughts and deeds are observed; incidentally it was placed atop the unfinished pyramid on the reverse side of the Great Seal of the United States 14 years prior.
The all-seeing eye has been around since ancient times. In India, the sanskrit text of the Rig Veda refers to the sun and other deities as being the eye. The Hindu god Shiva has three eyes, the third eye representing the all-seeing eye possessing knowledge to destroy evil and ignorance. In Nepal, Buddha is referred to as the eye of the world, known for wisdom and compassion. In ancient Egypt, the eye of Horus and Ra were seen as symbols of protection, healing, and restoration. In the Middle East, the all-seeing eye can be found in the center of the Hamsa to protect against evil. Of course there are many more similar portrayals throughout history regarding the positive associations of the eye. In Christianity, the eye symbol is referenced to “Jesus tomb” from the 1st century AD that was discovered in 1980 and has an eye-pyramid symbol. Regardless whose tomb this was, it’s the first known to carry an eye symbol.

And yet today, the eye has come to symbolize control and domination by the shadowy elite. This is a clear sign that the symbol is being misused. Many see the eye and think elite, Illuminati, or freemason, and yet I tend to think of ancient Egypt and the Eye of Ra or Horus, where it represents the eye of God. Interpretation depends on how you were educated about the symbol. People are often curious when it comes to secret societies, although they are regularly distrusted since they are shrouded in mystery and conspiracy.

Without delving into the history of the Bavarian Illuminati founded in 1776, today the Illuminati is a name given to several groups, some are fictitious, while others are not. Groups like the Illuminati, Skull and Bones, Freemasons, Bohemian Grove, and the Bilderberg Group are said to be made up of world leaders, business authorities, innovators, artists, and other influential people. Some claim the Illuminati has demonic ties and special control over the rest of society, with their goal being “New World Order.” In this setting, the symbol is seen as one of control by the elites, who to a large extent run this planet. It is said one joins the Illuminati in exchange for wealth, fame, and power. Unfortunately, many of the people belonging in these groups run strictly on ego and entitlement. We can only hope they aren’t Luciferians or Satanists, but rumors abound around those who hold great power and influence. As Sir John Dalberg-Acton, 8th Baronet, once wrote in his letter to the Anglican bishop. “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men…”

I’m saddened society has destroyed what was once a symbol of goodness. Of course, I don’t believe that everyone who uses the symbol is part of the Illuminati or a Satanistic occult and feel it’s more of a monkey-see monkey-do mentality, especially if making the all-seeing eye symbol gets them headlines.
